Course Overview

Designing seamless, inclusive, and intuitive user experiences is essential to engage and retain audiences across platforms. As users become more discerning and expect higher levels of functionality and accessibility, effective UX and UI design has become a critical capability in product and service development. Success in this area requires an in-depth understanding of interaction design, information architecture, and user behaviour, combined with the ability to translate insight into elegant, usable design solutions. 

This course equips learners with the theory and practical skills needed to create compelling digital experiences. Participants will explore core principles of user-centred design, including user research, journey mapping, prototyping, and usability testing. By responding to real-world briefs and applying design thinking methodologies, learners will gain confidence in solving complex design challenges through informed, creative decisions. 

The course introduces key areas of UX and UI design, from concept to delivery, using a step-by-step approach. Learners will be able to interpret project requirements, understand user needs, evaluate research findings, and design aesthetically engaging and functionally robust solution. This course addresses the growing demand for digital designers who can balance creativity with strategic thinking. Dr. Pinar Yelmi brings significant international design experience to PACE, joining the University of Leeds in 2022. She teaches in the fully online MA Digital Design and Communication program, focusing on design thinking. With over a decade of collaboration with cultural institutions worldwide, Dr. Yelmi's expertise includes industrial product design and visual communication, particularly in interactive and participatory design experiences. Her courses integrate current digital and interactive design trends, encouraging creativity and innovation through hands-on projects and interactive workshops. Dr. Yelmi holds a bachelor's degree in industrial design from Middle East Technical University (Ankara, Türkiye), a master's degree in visual communication design from Politecnico di Milano (Milano, Italy), and a PhD in Design, Technology, and Society from Koç University (Istanbul, Türkiye). Before joining Leeds, she taught at Işık University (Istanbul, Türkiye) and managed undergraduate and graduate programmes.
